ILLU
Science & Art.
ILLU Science & Art serves as a meeting place for the local community. It hosts regular activities for visiting and local artists and scientists, open to the public.
Central to ILLU is the integration of scientific research, art, and storytelling within the community, ensuring that all forms of knowledge are shared and anchored to the place where it is created. This is achieved through a range of activities, including workshops, seminars, exhibitions, outdoor events, and art installations.
Located in Ilulissat, where the consequences of climate change are evident and impacting livelihoods such as fishing and hunting, ILLU provides a platform for addressing these challenges and exploring adaptation solutions with the community that experiences them firsthand. Our approach centres on innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship across art, design, technology, and science, challenging both creative and scientific boundaries.
ILLU is situated at the heart of economic, political, and environmental change, with a view over the UNESCO Heritage-listed Icefjord, the retreating glacier Sermeq Kujalleq, and the new airport set to open in Ilulissat in 2026.
While some perceive these changes as inevitable, the youth who often visit ILLU during their school hours bring with them questions and ideas that have puzzled NASA scientists and artists staying there. Therefore, ILLU is particularly committed to engaging younger visitors to wonder and shape future solutions.
